Let students know that they were chosen because of their welcoming spirit and and their special bilingual abilities. It’s important to make the position of being a buddy one of prestige. The buddy can introduce the new student to classroom routines. An excellent way to support these newcomers is to assign them a first-language buddy. When newcomers enter a mainstream classroom where the teacher does not speak their first language, they’re often overwhelmed. Pair a newcomer with a partner who speaks the same primary language.
